“Twice a year” is the answer most people have heard, and for a lot of homes it holds up. But Scotland’s climate makes gutter maintenance less predictable than that rule suggests, and properties a few streets apart in Paisley can need very different schedules depending on what’s growing around them.
The Baseline: Twice a Year
For an average semi-detached or terraced home without heavy tree cover, two clearances a year is usually enough:
- Late autumn (November): After the bulk of leaf fall has finished. This is the more important of the two — it clears the system before winter rainfall and freezing conditions arrive.
- Spring (March to April): Clears the moss, silt and roof grit that accumulate over winter, plus anything blown in during storms.
